What to Do If Your Main Sewer Line Becomes Clogged

A clogged sewer line is a major emergency! If you notice signs of a clogged sewer line in your commercial kitchen, contact Commercial Grease Trap Cleaning Corp. immediately. We’ll work with your schedule to provide prompt emergency drain cleaning service.

Signs of a Sewer Line Clog

All of the drains in your facility ultimately empty into the sewer main line. If this line becomes clogged, you will notice a series of plumbing problems, including:

  • Dark water in floor drains – One of the first signs of a sewer line clog is water backing up into low-lying drains. Showers, tub, and floor drains tend to clog and backup first. This water will be dark and odorous, and likely contain raw sewage.
  • Slow drains – Another common symptom of a sewer line clog is slow moving drains throughout the building. If water begins pooling in all of your drains, including the toilet, your sewer line is likely clogged.
  • Gurgling sounds – As the drains in your facility slowly back up, air bubbles will become trapped in the pipes. Then, when you use your plumbing fixtures, these bubbles cause gurgling noises to rumble throughout the building.

Causes of a Sewer Line Clog

Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are the primary contributors to sewer line clogs. If your grease trap is not properly maintained, FOG will escape into the sewer line. As it cools, FOG hardens and becomes deposited on the walls of the pipe, eventually forming a clog. Other common objects that cause clogs include paper towels, wipes, and other sanitary items that get flushed down the toilets.
