5 Tips for Preventing Clogged Drains in Commercial Kitchens

Clogged drains are a headache that every commercial kitchen owner must deal with. At Commercial Grease Trap Cleaning Corp., we have seen some nasty clogs over the years. With more than 50 years of experience, we have compiled a list of our top five tips for keeping your drains free and clear.

1. Collect Grease

Grease is one of the primary culprits of clogged kitchen drains. As grease travels down the drain, it cools and congeals, creating a sticky clog that traps food particles and debris. Before you know it, your tiny grease clog can turn into a major problem. To avoid grease buildup in your drains, strain and collect grease from liquid waste prior to dumping the liquid waste down the drain.

2. Avoid the Garbage Disposal

While garbage disposals are convenient, frequent use and abuse of garbage disposal units can lead to clogs. Garbage disposals allow unwanted food and debris to build up in your sanitary sewer. Debris then builds up on the walls of your side sewer, ultimately resulting in a backup.

3. Dispose of Food Debris

To prevent food particles, grease, and grime from ever entering the drain, scrape and wipe all utensils and pans into the trash prior to washing. We recommend wiping pans, utensils, and dishes with paper towels so that all debris can be placed directly into the trash bin. This practice minimizes the amount of debris that reaches the sink, and prevents dish cloths and sponges from transferring grease and debris to the drain.

4. Clean Sink Strainers

Even after wiping, straining, and scraping utensils and dishes, it is inevitable that debris will wind up in your sink. To help keep your drains clear, be sure to frequently remove and clean your sink strainers. The better you maintain your strainers, the better you will maintain the flow of your drains.

5. Schedule Regular Drain Cleaning

Despite your best efforts, drains still can clog and become a problem. Scheduling regular preventative maintenance is the only surefire way to keep your drains free from clogs. At Commercial Grease Trap Cleaning Corp., we recommend drain cleaning and grease trap cleaning services every three months. Our experienced technicians will work around your busy hours to quickly and efficiently clean drains and grease traps.
